Darkness Be My Friend

Running in the dark
In the park
My eyes are blind
My stomach leaps
Every shadow brushes me with death
Should I have listened to them?
My logic cautions
Don’t
Be dumb!
Or numb
To unspoke danger
So I run
I let the darkness wrap me round, embrace
Til I become
The one on the inside
Looking out
My heart beats fast, fierce
I am wild
Untamed
Tiny, a mere heart abeat, at one with the inkiness
En garde, world! - now I
am coming for you.
Note: The title of this poem is a nod to the dystopian young adult novel Darkness, Be My Friend by John Marsden.
